I filed for divorce and my soon to be ex-husband didn't answer the petition, does he have any rights?

i filed for divorce the first of april 2011. the local sheriffs office served him with the petition and he had 30 days to answer or contest what i had filed for. he never answered! does he have a leg to stand on? can he come back and counter file, even though he didn't answer my petition for divorce?
